JUNO BEACH – It’s turtle walk season, a time when people can witness one of the Atlantic Coast environment’s most remarkable moments: sea turtle nesting.

Local residents and visitors in northern Palm Beach County can register for guided walks at Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for $40 or MacArthur Beach State Park in North Palm Beach for $25 to see female loggerhead sea turtles lay nests in the sand.

The walks run for three hours a few nights each week in June and July until about midnight. On occasion, on a walk with Loggerhead Marinelife Center, you might even see baby sea turtles hatch from their eggs and scurry to the ocean, which usually emerge in groups of 80 to 120 hatchlings.

While turtle sightings are not guaranteed, there is a 92% success rate for seeing a turtle lay eggs during an excursion at Loggerhead Marinelife Center, according to Hannah Campbell, its director of education. Researchers say it is a good year for sea turtle nest numbers in the area, but not on the record-setting pace of last year.

What will you see?

Loggerhead Marinelife Center and McArthur Beach State Park start their turtle walks with educational presentations about sea turtle conservation. Meanwhile, staff members search the beach for turtle activity.

Once they spot a turtle and she reaches a certain stage in her nesting process, they lead the group over to watch her lay eggs in the sand and return to the ocean.

The process can take the turtle about 45 minutes to an hour, Campbell said. The staff will also shine a red light on the egg chamber so guests can see the eggs in the sand.

They are typically laid about a foot below the surface of the sand somewhere about halfway between the beach’s shoreline and the dunes, according to Loggerhead researcher Sarah Hirsch.

Don't use your phone

This one may come as a shocker to 21st century members of society: Phone use is not permitted on the beach during turtle walks.

This is because light from phones can disorient nesting turtles, which can discourage them from laying any eggs on the beach that night, Hirsch said.

Red light, like the one that staff uses to illuminate the egg chamber, is less distracting for sea turtles because they view them as dimmer than white light, according to Campbell.

“White lights can be extremely disorienting not only to nesting turtles, but as we progress in the season, to hatchlings that may be emerging,” Campbell said.

Wear dark clothing

Loggerhead and MacArthur Beach staff direct turtle walk-goers to wear dark clothing, which helps limit the impact to the turtle, Campbell said.

“In the spirit of minimizing our impact on the nesting animals, dark clothing allows each individual to blend in with the dark surroundings much better than bright or unnatural-colored clothing,” Campbell said.

Keep your distance and speak quietly

When visiting nesting turtles, the farther away you are, the better. The distance should be at least 30 feet away or more to not disrupt the turtle, Campbell said.

Guides at Loggerhead Marinelife Center tend to tell guests to use their indoor voices during a turtle walk to keep a serene atmosphere for the turtle.

“It's not like it's a silent experience, but we are always mindful of our impact on the turtle,” Campbell said.

Be prepared to walk

You can expect to walk a half-mile in uneven sand during a turtle walk with Loggerhead Marinelife Center and up to 2 miles at MacArthur Beach State Park.

Oh, and no-see-ums and mosquitoes will likely be out. So don’t forget to wear bug spray.

A pair of apartment buildings near the ocean in Deerfield Beach have been targeted in a foreclosure lawsuit, and two office condominium properties in Palm Beach County could also be seized.

Little Big Man Enterprises LLC filed a foreclosure lawsuit in Broward County Circuit Court on Feb. 23 against Boca Deerfield Properties LLC and loan guarantor Janalie Camille Joseph of Las Vegas over the apartments. The case also names Globe Property Offices LLC and South Olive Office LLC over two office condo properties in Palm Beach County that are covered by loans from two related lenders.

Little Big Man Enterprises had a loan directly to Boca Deerfield Properties. Globe Property Offices and South Olive Office had loans directly from Kiegai LLC and Trad4 LCC, respectively. All three lenders are related entities and the loans were cross-collateralized, according to the lawsuit.

Kiegai and Trad4 dismissed their claims without prejudice May 2. Little Big Man Enterprises filed a motion for default judgment against Boca Deerfield Properties, Globe Property Offices and South Olive Office on the same day.

The foreclosure concerns the five-unit apartment building at 501 N. Ocean Drive, the three-unit apartment building at 487 N.E. 21st Ave. and the 6,946-square-foot lot at 501 N.E. 21st Ave. Boca Deerfield Properties assembled the property for $3.8 million in March 2023 with the help of a $2 million mortgage from Little Big Man Enterprises.

According to the complaint, Boca Deerfield Properties is in default because the two mortgages it’s cross-collateralized on, the loans held by Globe Property Offices and South Olive Office, have missed payments.

Globe Property Offices owns the office condos at 741, 745 and 749 U.S. Highway 1 in North Palm Beach. The space totals about 37,000 square feet in three buildings. The property was acquired for $3.3 million in 2019 and is covered by a $2.3 million mortgage.

South Olive Office owns an office condo on the ground floor of Two City Plaza, at 701 S. Olive Ave., Unit 118, in West Palm Beach. It was purchased for $1.35 million in 2021 and is covered by a $677,083 mortgage.

Miami-based attorney Benjamin Brodsky represents the lender in the lawsuit. Brian M. Gaines, the managing member of the borrower, declined to comment on the case.

Joseph couldn’t be reached for comment. She’s also named in pending foreclosure lawsuits over a medical office building in Plantation and a bank building in Lauderdale Lakes.

After years of study, the public has until May 21 to weigh in on detailed plans to extend the diagonal runway at the North Palm Beach County Airport.

The county has been pursuing the extension to 6,000 feet from 4,300 feet since identifying the need in 2006. It would allow more jets, including Cessnas and Gulfstreams.

“The proposed project is expected to induce an increase in aircraft operations at the airport to meet existing demand from larger aircraft,” a recently completed consultant’s report says.

An expected 2,500 more aircraft operations are projected by 2030 over the 110,346 already anticipated. Jets would account for about 700 more operations. The total project is expected to cost $25 million and be completed by 2025.

Environmental Science Associates of Tampa’s $1 million Draft Environmental Assessmentreviews alternative options and documents impacts such as noise and wetland destruction.

A $743,000 federal grant helped pay for the report. The COVID-delayed study began in 2019.

The county-owned airport is just outside of Palm Beach Gardens west of the terminus of PGA Boulevard at the Beeline Highway. The airport opened in 1994 as a general aviation reliever for Palm Beach International Airport.

In 2016, Palm Beach Gardens signed off on the expansion as long as the county applied for a control tower, which is included in the county plans.

Since then, construction has begun on nearly 4,000 homes, most selling for more than $1 million, in Avenir, about a mile southwest of the airport.

The study found no noise impact on Avenir because it lies beyond high-noise areas, which are confined to the airport grounds.

About 12.5 acres of wetlands would be affected by the runway and taxiway extension and the move of a portion of the airport access road. Another 21 acres would be subject to tree trimming at the edges of the runway.

No wetlands in the county-owned Loxahatchee Slough would be affected. The county would replace the destroyed wetlands nearby.

Residents can see the plans at a workshop at 5:30 pm May 14 at Palm Beach State College’s Palm Beach Gardens Campus, Biotech Building, Room SC-127, 3160 PGA Blvd. Staff will accept public comments starting at 6:30 pm.

A comprehensive review of airport projects was scheduled for yesterday's County Commission meeting.

Consolidating car rental facilities at PBIA near the terminal would cost $315 million while consolidating north of Belvedere Road would cost $171 million. Parking costs could be going up.

A 164-foot yacht named Honey gets the cold shoulder in North Palm Beach

The very best part of this story is the revelation that we — little ol' Palm Beach County — have become a "mini-Monaco" for the wealthy mariners of the world who can handle a little chop in their 164-foot mega yachts. (I can't resist a "Wolf of Wall Street" clip) But once they get the yachts here here, they face a serious parking dilemma.

A North Palm Beach homeowner just wants to dock his yacht named Honey at his home. Trouble is, he has to "occupy" the home and since he's got several other homes in Palm Beach County and this one isn't his primary residence the definition of "occupy" seems to be the stumbling point.

It's a real Palm Beach dilemma. Too many homes and a mega yacht. Sigh.

Penthouse at The Bristol in West Palm Beach sells for $28 million

The ultra-luxury tower that some folks originally poo-pooed because it was in West Palm Beach instead of Palm Beach just had another record sale for a single-condominium at a recorded $27.99 million. The six-bedroom penthouse is one half of the 23rd floor of the swanky condo that sparkles like a beacon of affluence on the shores of the beleaguered Lake Worth Lagoon.

The seller was a company affiliated with a trust in the name of the late Boston developer Gerald S. Fineberg. The buyer's side is a mystery hidden in a trust that's sealed inside the lost treasure of Oak Island.

Michael Jordan buys another multi-million dollar home in the ultra-exclusive Bear's Club

Just a guess, but I'm thinking Michael Jordan can buy a home just about any-dang-where he pleases. For the first time last year, Jordan made the Forbes list of the country's 400 richest people, so to choose another property in the Bear's Club in Jupiter must say something about its exclusivity and high-end amenities.

His new 9,100-square-foot home has nothing on his custom-built estate nearby, but it did cost a recorded $16.5 million, which ain't too shabby.

New York's acclaimed Kyma Greek restaurant coming to West Palm Beach

If a renowned New York restaurant is going to open its first eatery outside of New York, where else is it going to go than Wall Street South? So, of course, Kyma, which offers traditional Greek taverna food, will be coming to downtown West Palm Beach by next year with ground-floor space AND a lively rooftop area.

I do so love a piece of baklava, but at $14-a-pop, it's a little above my budget. There's a nice happy-hour menu with lots of $10 "bites", which seems more doable for the non Wall Street Southerners .
