Learn More About the Top Home Security Company in North Port, FL

If there's one thing that homeowners in North Port can agree on, it's that security and safety risks are part of life. You assume some risk - even if it's small - every time you walk out of your front door. Fortunately, there are many procedures and processes in place to protect us from being victims of crimes, especially in public areas like grocery stores. But what about when we're at home? According to the FBI, property crime accounts for more than 85% of all crime in the U.S. In fact, almost 4.8 million cases of property crime were reported in 2021 alone, with 50% of people reporting that they believe a property crime could happen to them.

If you live in North Port, chances are you've heard of or know someone personally who has been affected by a break-in or robbery. Property crimes and package theft are higher than the national average, at 53% and 61% respectively. Could you imagine coming home from dinner out with your family, only to see your front door smashed in and your belongings gone? Of course, being the victim of a home break-in is about more than disposable items like TVs and electronics. When the sacred space of your home is violated, you lose peace of mind. What's stopping the criminals from coming back and robbing your home again? Will they tell other criminals that your home is an easy target? Will your children be able to sleep at night knowing that their home has been broken into?

If you're like other North Port homeowners and believe that peace of mind and safety is priceless, ask yourself this: "What am I doing to make sure my home is protected from burglars?" For most, the answer to that question begins by installing a home security system in North Port, FL. When you have a burglar alarm installed, you'll have more peace of mind at home or when you're away, knowing that a home security system company like Prime Protection has got your back.

Why Should I Invest in a Home Security System in North Port, FL?

Whether you live in a gated community miles from a metropolitan area or you enjoy the hustle and bustle of the big city, having a home alarm system is a smart investment. Modern home security systems do more than sound an alarm if someone breaks in - they can include home automation features that make your life easier and can even help reduce energy consumption. But that's just the start. Let's take a look at some of the biggest reasons why you should consider investing in a burglar alarm for your home in North Port.

ADT Alarm System North Port, FL

The top reason to buy a security system for your home is for the protection it provides. From home intrusions and burglaries to fires and even natural disasters, today's residential home monitoring systems work even when you're not there. They can also help in the event of a medical emergency. Buying a robust alarm or camera system for security is an investment.

However, when you discover that the average burglary costs homeowners more than $2,600 per victim (according to the FBI), the cost starts to make a lot of sense. When you're the victim of a home break-in, the damage goes beyond fiscal. There's long-lasting psychological damage that occurs, too, and having a home security system can help prevent that trauma.

ADT Security Systems North Port, FL

Research conducted by Professor Joe Kuhns of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at UNC Charlotte found that nearly 60% of burglars planned their break-ins less than 24 hours before attempting them. Additionally, 83% of burglars surveyed reported that they looked for signs of an alarm system, and over half of them stated that they would abandon their plans if they saw one. This research underscores the effectiveness of visible alarm system indicators such as ADT stickers, yard signs, and outdoor cameras in deterring potential burglars, as their crimes are often opportunistic in nature.

Smart Home Systems North Port, FL

By installing a home security system, you can have peace of mind, knowing that your home is protected whether you're away or asleep. Plus, modern wireless security systems from ADT that are connected to the internet also allow you to check on your home from anywhere in the world. So, if you're on a business trip in Dubai and want to check on your home, you can do so in a moment's time.

ADT Home Automation North Port, FL

When you have a professionally installed home alarm system from a company like Prime Protection, many home insurance companies offer you a discount on the price of your premium. More substantial discounts typically apply to systems that include environmental monitoring for smoke, water damage, fire, and intrusion monitoring. While a discount on your home insurance may not cover the total home security camera system in North Port, FL, it can make having one more affordable over time. Plus, if you need to file an insurance claim for a break-in or other event, having high-def, reliable video footage can be incredibly beneficial.

"Measures of homebuying demand and competition are dropping off quickly in Florida, and listings and price drops are surging," said the report.

It was followed by Tampa, which experienced price drops of 8.0 percentage points year-over-year, and Cape Coral, which reported price drops of 4.6 percentage points from April 2023.

Prices are cooling so fast in Florida's west coast because of a new-construction boom which is increasing inventory in the state, a drop in demand linked to unaffordable prices and high mortgage rates, and the beginning of a potentially devastating hurricane season which could send already-high home insurance premiums skyrocketing.

Natural disasters like Hurricane Ian in 2022, which destroyed approximately 5,000 homes and damaged nearly 30,000 others in Cape Coral alone, are a leading contributor to a surge in new construction in the region, as builders work to replace homes that have been lost.

These same natural disasters, and their expected increase in frequency and severity due to climate change, are leading private insurers to hike homeowners' premiums—another factor discouraging demand in these markets.

"Inventory is back up to pre-pandemic levels along the west coast of Florida as natural disasters continue to shape the region's housing market by leading to more supply and less demand," said Redfin Senior Economist Elijah de la Campa in a news release.

"Construction is booming in the wake of recent climate disasters, and there's less demand to buy new homes as the region braces for another intense hurricane season," he continued, adding that the drop in prices is likely to be welcome news for aspiring homebuyers in the long term.

"While that's disappointing for sellers, who may have to part with their home for less money than they would like, a bigger pool of listings to choose from is good news for the region's homebuyers. More supply is the best way to bring down prices and combat the housing affordability crisis buyers are facing today—and that's exactly what's happening in parts of Florida."

Newsweek contacted Redfin for comment on the report's findings by email on Wednesday morning.

Despite the fact that these markets are quickly cooling down, they remain unaffordable for many. Home prices in North Port are up 60 percent since 2019, according to Redfin, while in Tampa they are now 70 percent higher. At the national level, prices are 40 percent higher than they used to be before the pandemic.

New Costco opens in North Port with immediate impact on the job market; half of the 240 employees are new local hires

Sarasota Herald-Tribune

NORTH PORT – Hundreds of Costco shoppers waiting for the new North Port store to open in Wellen Park were rewarded with 23 bonus minutes of shopping, as warehouse manager Ledif Bobey opened the doors at 7:37 a.m., following a brief ceremony and ribbon cutting.

The advertised grand opening time was 8 a.m. Near the front of the loosely organized line, North Port residents Brenda and Terry Seal had been waiting since 6 a.m.

“We love Costco, we always have,” Terry Seal said.

They'd shopped at the Sarasota store but said they are happy to have a Costco membership warehouse closer to home.

Ilona and Andrew Duvall, also North Port residents, came out of curiosity.

Ilona had shopped at the Sarasota store but Andrew had never been to one.

“I thought the selections are outstanding and so I really enjoyed it, and I kept saying, ‘I hope we get one in North Port,’ and we did!” Ilona Duvall said.

Their wait for the store to open pales by comparison to the overnight camping by people waiting for the Costco liquor store to open – but more on that later.

North Port Costco is second to open in Sarasota County

Costco Wholesale Corporation’s newest store covers 157,000 square feet.

Technically, it is only open for warehouse members, who pay to belong at rates starting at $60 annually.

Typical hours of operation for the warehouse are 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The new Costco is at 11700 Mezzo Drive, on the southeast side of a new roundabout on U.S. 41 that connects the highway with Mezzo Drive to the south and Tortuga Cay Drive to the north.

Immediately south of the roundabout, there’s also a direct entrance from U.S. 41 southbound to the gas station.

Shoppers in North Port are greeted by big-screen TVs at the entrance and can follow aisles full of bargains, samples and perhaps pick up a bargain rotisserie chicken for dinner.

It is the second Costco in Sarasota County and third in the region, along with stores at Sarasota Square Mall and State Road 64, off of Interstate 75 in Manatee County.

Costco also has a store off of Interstate 75 in Brandon and two in Lee County.

Costco currently operates 878 warehouses worldwide, with 605 of those in the United States.

“Our expansion, both nationally and globally is due to enthusiastic acceptance by our members of our distinctive and unique model of retailing,” Costco president and CEO Ron Vachris said in a prepared statement.

The company has earned a good reputation for its selection of brand-name and private-label merchandise, as well as offering its employees the highest wages in the warehouse industry and ethical business practices.

The North Port store opened with a roster of 240 employees, including 120 transfers from other stores and 120 new hires from North Port and south Sarasota County.

Tara Coltman, Southeast Regional Marketing Manager for Costco, said Florida in general is an attractive place, “but North Port is up and coming.”

News of the retailer coming to North Port broke in September, 2021. General contractor Gray Construction and Costco staff needed only 130 days to build and stock the store.

“One hundred and thirty days ago, there was nothing here,” said Bobey, who has lived in North Port for five years. “And in 130 days, the entire place came. And I couldn't have done it without the construction workers, all of our employees working tirelessly, the support from the county, the city and the (West) Villages.

“The first thing that said hello to me was a sandhill crane so that’s part of my shirt right now – I had never seen them before,” he added.

A regional welcome party for Costco

More than 260 members pre-registered with the North Port Area Chamber of Commerce for Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting. They were joined by the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce for what was essentially a regional celebration.

“Costco is here, baby!” Bill Gunnin, executive director of the North Port Area Chamber of Commerce said, as the festivities opened. “I tell you what, there’s nobody home, they’re all out here.

“There’s been a line of people for that bourbon special, it’s unreal.”

Sarasota County Commissioner Ron Cutsinger reminisced about how when he moved to Englewood 50 years ago and drove Tamiami Trail, “there was nothing here – I could never have imagined that one day there'd be a Costco 10 minutes from my house.

“What a wonderful community,” he added. “This is not only Costo, this is an amazing community and this sets the bar for what North Port is doing and what North Port is going to do.”

North Port City Manager Jerome Fletcher echoed the sentiments of both men when it was his turn at the microphone.

“There are over 90,000 people in the city of North Port and I believe all of them will be here today,” Fletcher said. “It will raise and elevate South County.”

Fletcher acknowledged the behind the scenes work that went on to allow the Costco to open in 130 days “that no one will ever see and appreciate.”

Then. Sharon Matthews, president of the North Port Area Chamber of Commerce, officially rolled out the welcome mat.

“We are thrilled to have you join our community,” Matthews said. “We look forward to partnering with you and seeing all the wonderful things in our community that we can do for you.”

‘Bourbon, bourbon and bourbon’

Deerfield Beach resident Kevin Triplett – first in line for the liquor store to open – was among the enthusiasts who spent almost 12 hours in line waiting for Costco to open.

Triplett summed up his reason to travel across the state as, “Bourbon, bourbon and bourbon – hard-to-get bourbons that Costcos typically won’t get any other time – during the grand openings, they have highly allocated stuff and very good prices.

“That’s why we’re all here.”

The opening of the North Port store is the third one he’s attended to snatch up good bourbon at bargain prices. Before that it was Clermont and Daytona Beach.

“This is the most people I’ve seen in line for the opening of a regular store in the three openings I’ve been to,” he added. "Daytona was 10 or 12” people.

Pensacola resident Byron Allen visited his cousin Harvey Purvis in Clermont and both decided to drive south for bourbon bargains, too.

“It’s pretty down here, it’s nice,” Purvis said. “Everything is fresh and new.

Allen added: “It’s going to develop in the next few years, with Costco here.”

NORTH PORT, Fla. - Lillian and Declan Henriques’ bike ride looked a lot different Monday than it did a few days ago.

"It was just really sad to see all the forest and stuff burned down. There was a lot of green, and now it’s gone," said 12-year-old Lillian.

On Saturday night, just after 5 p.m., they weren’t sure what would be left of their North Port neighborhood.

"When I saw the smoke I was getting really nervous, because it was growing really fast," said 6-year-old Declan.

As crews responded to the fire near Sultan Avenue and Lown Street, one block down off Ploves Road, Erik Yurchak and his family knew it was time to leave.

"My 10-year-old daughter looked out the window and just saw a wall of flames," he told FOX 13.

It only took minutes before the fire surrounded both sides of their home.

"I was certain that I was seeing our house burning," he said.

The Florida Forest Service is still working to determine what caused the fire, but it quickly grew to 75 acres.

"We had wind, dry conditions, and it was a recipe to be a fire like this," said Deputy Chief Scott Lane with North Port Fire Rescue.

Sarasota County remains one of the driest counties in the state.

"Residents need to adhere to the burn ban that we have, because any spark from a charcoal grill, discarded cigarette or if they’re doing an illegal burn in their backyard, can cause a fire like this to happen because of the dryness in the area," said Lane.

Further North in Manatee County, commissioners approved a burn ban on all outdoor burning and use of fireworks or sparklers, unless it’s a professional display. The ban includes items containing any "explosive compound," sparklers, any item or product using or containing any amount of pyrotechnic composition, flares, open burning and campfires because of the increasingly dry conditions in the county.

The following uses will be allowed:

The Manatee County burn ban will be in effect until 11:59 p.m. on June 10, 2024, unless extended as allowed by law.

"It’s a life safety measure, protection of property," said Jodie Fiske, the Manatee County director of public safety.

Fire crews were able to save the homes in the North Port neighborhood, but some had minor damages. Yurchak's fence melted and his windows cracked from the heat, but people in the area are thankful to those who rushed into the fire.

"There’s just not words to describe how thankful we are, and you can tell this is all thanks to them. There should not be a house here without them, it’s pretty amazing," Yurchak said.
