Learn More About the Top Home Security Company in Venice, FL

If there's one thing that homeowners in Venice can agree on, it's that security and safety risks are part of life. You assume some risk - even if it's small - every time you walk out of your front door. Fortunately, there are many procedures and processes in place to protect us from being victims of crimes, especially in public areas like grocery stores. But what about when we're at home? According to the FBI, property crime accounts for more than 85% of all crime in the U.S. In fact, almost 4.8 million cases of property crime were reported in 2021 alone, with 50% of people reporting that they believe a property crime could happen to them.

If you live in Venice, chances are you've heard of or know someone personally who has been affected by a break-in or robbery. Property crimes and package theft are higher than the national average, at 53% and 61% respectively. Could you imagine coming home from dinner out with your family, only to see your front door smashed in and your belongings gone? Of course, being the victim of a home break-in is about more than disposable items like TVs and electronics. When the sacred space of your home is violated, you lose peace of mind. What's stopping the criminals from coming back and robbing your home again? Will they tell other criminals that your home is an easy target? Will your children be able to sleep at night knowing that their home has been broken into?

If you're like other Venice homeowners and believe that peace of mind and safety is priceless, ask yourself this: "What am I doing to make sure my home is protected from burglars?" For most, the answer to that question begins by installing a home security system in Venice, FL. When you have a burglar alarm installed, you'll have more peace of mind at home or when you're away, knowing that a home security system company like Prime Protection has got your back.

Why Should I Invest in a Home Security System in Venice, FL?

Whether you live in a gated community miles from a metropolitan area or you enjoy the hustle and bustle of the big city, having a home alarm system is a smart investment. Modern home security systems do more than sound an alarm if someone breaks in - they can include home automation features that make your life easier and can even help reduce energy consumption. But that's just the start. Let's take a look at some of the biggest reasons why you should consider investing in a burglar alarm for your home in Venice.

 ADT Alarm System Venice, FL

The top reason to buy a security system for your home is for the protection it provides. From home intrusions and burglaries to fires and even natural disasters, today's residential home monitoring systems work even when you're not there. They can also help in the event of a medical emergency. Buying a robust alarm or camera system for security is an investment.

However, when you discover that the average burglary costs homeowners more than $2,600 per victim (according to the FBI), the cost starts to make a lot of sense. When you're the victim of a home break-in, the damage goes beyond fiscal. There's long-lasting psychological damage that occurs, too, and having a home security system can help prevent that trauma.

 ADT Security Systems Venice, FL

Research conducted by Professor Joe Kuhns of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at UNC Charlotte found that nearly 60% of burglars planned their break-ins less than 24 hours before attempting them. Additionally, 83% of burglars surveyed reported that they looked for signs of an alarm system, and over half of them stated that they would abandon their plans if they saw one. This research underscores the effectiveness of visible alarm system indicators such as ADT stickers, yard signs, and outdoor cameras in deterring potential burglars, as their crimes are often opportunistic in nature.

 Smart Home Systems Venice, FL

By installing a home security system, you can have peace of mind, knowing that your home is protected whether you're away or asleep. Plus, modern wireless security systems from ADT that are connected to the internet also allow you to check on your home from anywhere in the world. So, if you're on a business trip in Dubai and want to check on your home, you can do so in a moment's time.

 ADT Home Automation Venice, FL

When you have a professionally installed home alarm system from a company like Prime Protection, many home insurance companies offer you a discount on the price of your premium. More substantial discounts typically apply to systems that include environmental monitoring for smoke, water damage, fire, and intrusion monitoring. While a discount on your home insurance may not cover the total home security camera system in Venice, FL, it can make having one more affordable over time. Plus, if you need to file an insurance claim for a break-in or other event, having high-def, reliable video footage can be incredibly beneficial.

A Florida man was fossil hunting off the beaches of Venice, Florida in Sarasota County, just a hop, skip, and a jump from where I live, and he found a priceless mammoth tusk while diving in 25-feet of water.

Fossil hunting or fossiling is an extremely popular activity in this part of Florida but almost exclusively with divers or beachgoers looking for sharks teeth. And the best spots aren’t always the ones you’d expect. I’ve found bigger and better sharks teeth 50 miles inland than I’ve ever found on the beach even when Caspersen Beach used to be a sharks teeth mecca before beach restoration buried the fossils under sand years ago.

I’m born and raised in this part of Florida and never in my life have I heard of someone finding an intact mammoth tusk like this until Alex Lundberg’s incredible find in 25 feet of water off Venice. Lundberg’s once-in-a-lifetime find went viral and Ft. Myers meteorologist Matt Devitt shared photos of it days later:

HOW COOL IS THIS?! 4 ft Mastodon tusk recently found while scuba diving off Venice, Florida! What an incredible find and glimpse into how much history our state has still under the water and sand. Credit: Alex Lundberg @WINKNews #Florida pic.twitter.com/9slkEkNtCf

— Matt Devitt (@MattDevittWX) May 20, 2024

It’s unclear specifically how old the mammoth tusk is but Alex Lundberg told Local10 News it’s 500,000 years old at the oldest and 10,000 years old at the youngest. He could opt to have the tusk radio carbon dated at some point to get a clearer idea of how old it is.

Alex Lundberg does possess a fossil hunting permit that is required in many parts of Florida in order “to protect and preserve vertebrate fossils and vertebrate paleontology sites.” After finding the mammoth tusk, he reported the fossil to the Florida Museum of Natural History which is required by the permit but he is allowed to keep the tusk.

For any fellow Floridians out there seeking to learn more about the fossil permit program check this out.

Mammoth tusks regularly sell for tens of thousands of dollars. However, when Local10 News asked Lundberg how much it was worth he deflected saying “I’m not too sure on the price, I’m more of a collector than a buyer/seller.” Hopefully, that fossil stays in Sarasota County where it’s been for hundreds of thousands of years.

For context, here is my haul of sharks tooth fossils from maybe 3 hours on a river 50 miles inland in SW Florida:

Like I said before, there are a LOT of sharks teeth inland if you know where to look (Google, check Google for tips).

Jaywalking is something that became popular back in the 1920s, around the time the automobile industry began thriving. However, 80% of people still decided to walk. This made it harder for new drivers to navigate the roadways.

Venice, Florida, is full of pedestrian charm, and Historic Downtown Venice on Venice Island at the center of the city, is a big pedestrian and bicycle-heavy locale, with many things within walking or biking distance, including the Gulf Beaches.

It is a thriving community that attracts tourists and seasonal residents year-round who can easily walk or bike to visit everything the city offers. With this much foot traffic, it is important to understand the laws and rights of pedestrians in Venice.

Florida Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Today, jaywalking refers to crossing where there is no crosswalk, crossing against traffic signals, and failing to yield. Jaywalking is not a legal term in the state, and crossing mid-block, referred to as jaywalking, is legal in many locations.

In 2021, Florida ranked second in the nation for pedestrian deaths. In the first half of 2021 alone, there was a 31% increase in pedestrian fatalities, which resulted in 444 pedestrian deaths within that short timeframe.

According to another report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities are becoming more and more common in Florida and across the US.

According to a data analysis, it was reported that the amount of pedestrian deaths amoung children under 15 due to speeding has more than doubled since 2018. There are also reports of increased reckless driving behaviors, a lack of safe crossings, and limited pedestrian visibility due to the lack of lighting and other safety strategies.

A Pedestrian’s Duty of Care

There are key traffic principles that both pedestrians and motorists in Venice should follow when sharing roadways, especially when attempting to cross roads like Jacuranda Blvd, Tamiami Trail, Center Road or Venice Avenue.

Right of Way and Due Care: Traffic laws say who should yield the right of way. This must be exercised reasonably with due care, keeping pedestrian and motorist safety in mind.

Yield at Crosswalks: A pedestrian can cross at mid-block sections but still need to yield the right of way outside a crosswalk. The pedestrian must yield if there is an approaching motorist and no crosswalk.

Must Use Sidewalk: Pedestrians should stay out of the roadways if a sidewalk is provided.

Pedestrians don’t always have the right of way in Florida. A pedestrian can’t enter a crosswalk any time they want to. Drivers must have adequate time and distance to stop, and the pedestrian needs to wait for the WALK sign to flash before proceeding.

How Pedestrian Laws Can Impact a Claim

When you are involved in an accident as a pedestrian in Venice, the injuries and damages are often severe. While many believe pedestrians always have the right of way, we have discovered above this isn’t always the case.

So, a pedestrian can be found solely or partially at fault for this kind of accident. If you are partially responsible, you may not be entitled to compensation, or the amount may be much lower.

Drivers have to follow all traffic signs and signals, including stopping at a red light. They must also be prepared to stop when the light is yellow. In the same respect, pedestrians also have to follow the WALK and NO WALKING signs when they come to the crosswalk at an intersection.

If pedestiran signals are not visible, then the pedestrian must follow all traffic signals and cross only when it is clear and safe.

Pedestrian Safety

When crossing, you should look both ways twice before entering the road. If you have the right of way as a pedestrian, you still want to try to make eye contact with an oncoming motorist to ensure visibility before crossing.

You also shouldn’t cross a road diagonally unless a traffic control officer allows it. Always take care when watching for motorists to make sure everyone stays safe.

When you violate pedestrian laws in Venice, you can be charged with a noncriminal traffic infraction, and you may have to pay a fine. However, if you were hit and it was the motorist’s fault, you can collect compensation from the party responsible for your injuries.

A local qualified, and experienced auto accident attorney can help you determine who is at fault and responsible for all your medical bills, lost wages, permanent injuries, and pain and suffering.

VENICE, Fla. —

A Florida woman found an unwelcome visitor in her kitchen last month.

Mary Hollenback said she heard rattling on the front screen door of her Venice, Florida, home. Moments later, she found the unexpected guest inside: An alligator.

“I thought someone was trying to get into the wrong house. I went to go check and see what was going on, turns out there was an alligator there!” Hollenback said.

Hollenback said it took 10 or 15 seconds from hearing the door rattle to seeing the nearly 8-foot-long alligator completely inside.

“He'd come forward a few feet and then it stopped. Then come forward a few feet more and stop. Then finally, got stuck between my island and stove. It couldn't move anymore. I mean, he was stuck," Hollenback said.

That's when her instincts kicked in.

"I got a little nervous. Grabbed my phone off the end of the island and went out onto my lanai and called 911," Hollenback said.

Man loses arm in gator attack behind Florida bar

Sarasota County deputies and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers came to the rescue. The team of five grabbed the nearly 8-foot alligator to their truck.

Hollenback said her screen is magnetic, so the alligator pushed it before propping the screen open.

“He was pushing on the bottom of it and he pushed on it hard enough that it broke down, broke the connection,” Hollenback said.

She said she believes the alligator came from the pond across the street from her house, but does not know what prompted it to come in.

“I’ve had alligators in the pond and I've seen gators,” she said.

While the alligator is long gone, the pictures are not. They gained Hollenback a spotlight across the nation, with the pictures going viral.

“A neighbor kind of started it. She posted it on Facebook and then I kind of jumped in to send it to everybody else,” Hollenback said. “Never in my wildest imagination would I have thought that it went, I mean, essentially viral.”

It is a special welcome for Hollenback, who recently moved to Florida from Indiana three years ago. While she was forced to throw away her rug and has minor scratches at the bottom of the cabinets, she said she learned to coexist with the animals in her new backyard.

“This guy was just being an alligator. He’s just doing what nature directed him to do, so I can't fault him,” Hollenback said. “It makes life in Florida a whole lot more interesting!”

FWC states the animal was transferred to an alligator farm.

VENICE, Fla. — You might live next to a friendly neighbor who routinely pops up to your front door just to say hello.

Well, this scaly neighbor not only made its presence known but invited itself into a Venice woman’s home unannounced in late March, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

On March 28, the FWC and Sarasota County deputies arrived at Mary Hollenback's home on Palatka Drive in Venice, after she called them about a nearly 8-foot-long alligator that pushed its way into her front screen door only latched by a magnet.

Hollenback told 10 Tampa Bay she was sitting in her living room that evening around 5 p.m. watching television when she heard banging on her front door, thinking it was someone who lost their way.

"I thought someone was trying to get into the wrong house. I got up, went to tell them they're in the wrong house," Hollenback said.

"...and then I grabbed my phone that was sitting on my island and headed out to the lanai and called 911," Hollenback continued.

Officials were on their way when the gator slid through her home and into her kitchen, where it got stuck between the island and the stove. This ill position eventually caused damage to Hollenback's cabinets, as the animal performed a death roll when officials tried to capture it, she said.

On March 28, officials arrived at Mary Hollenback's home on Palatka Drive in Venice, after she called them about an 8-foot-long alligator in her home.

Florida Fish and Wildlife told Hollenback the alligator most likely came from the pond across from her house as a result of mating season, which started this month and will last through June.

Hollenback thinks he was most likely making his way to another pond behind her house.

Recent sightings of alligators strutting through golf courses and expressways are evidence of mating season.

"He's just being a gator; he's doing what nature told him to do," Hollenback said. "My house was in his way so I can't be upset at an alligator for that."

VENICE, Fla. (WSVN) — A Florida homeowner found a scaly surprise in her hallway when an alligator made itself right at home inside her home, so she made a call to the experts to wrangle the reptile.

When Venice resident Mary Hollenback heard banging on her front screen door, she said she wasn’t too concerned.

“I thought it was somebody else who didn’t live here trying to get in, trying to get into the wrong house,” she said. “I got off the couch, came around the door prepared to say, ‘You’re in the wrong place.'”

But inside her home she found an unwanted guest. It was a scaly one with a tail.

Hollenback said two thoughts came to her.

“One is, ‘Oh, my gosh, I have an alligator in my house.’ Number two is, ‘Oh, my gosh, I have an alligator in my house. How am I going to get rid of him?'” she said.

Grabbing her phone, Hollenback dialed 911.

“By that point, I was shaking so badly, I didn’t know who else to call,” she said. “I don’t think I could have even looked up a phone number.”

The alligator made it from her hallway and appeared to get stuck in her kitchen.

It took a few Sarasota County Sheriff’s County deputies and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers to haul the 7-foot, 11-inch alligator away.

“They were so calm, so cool, so professional. They just acted like, ‘Oh, alligator in the house? OK. no big deal. We got it, case closed,'” said Hollenback.

The homeowner explained you’re how the alligator got in through her screen door.

“It’s just a magnet, but he was pushing on this and eventually just broke the magnetic connection,” she said.

And it appears the gator didn’t have to travel too far. Hollenback thinks he came from a pond located right across the street from her house.

“He had to come through two yards, cross the street and then come into my house, but nobody saw him,” she said.

Hollenback said she isn’t worried about any future visitors after getting the guest of a lifetime.

“‘Cause only in Florida you’re going to get an alligator in the house,” she said.

FWC officials said the alligator was transferred to an alligator farm.
